Outcomes

Patented technology (2011). Featured in Netflix documentary Chasing Coral. Extended Google Street View to underwater environments globally.

Invented and patented Underwater Street View at Google — a panoramic imaging system for capturing and mapping underwater marine environments in 3D. The technology extended Google's Street View platform to ocean environments around the world.

Impact

The technology was later featured prominently in the award-winning Netflix documentary Chasing Coral, where it was used to document coral reef degradation globally. This helped raise worldwide awareness of ocean ecosystem health and climate change impacts on marine environments.

Additional Street View Innovations

During the same period at Google, also introduced:

  • Street View Trike: Off-road capture capability launched at Taronga Zoo in Australia
  • River View: Mapping Australia's Murray River using Street View capture systems in collaboration with CSIRO
